You know...I hate how an author starts out with one character through an entire book. Say it's a trilogy. The second book then has no reference of the main character of the first book at all.
I HATE THIS.
i develop strong emotional ties to my main characters.
and i feel gutted when authors do this. WHY? WHY DO THEY DO THIS???

Hm? When has this ever happened? I think of myself as being a pretty seasoned fantasy reader, and I can't ever recall something like that happening. It wouldn't be the Sabriel/Abhorsen series by...that one guy, would it? Garth Nix, I think?

Okay i'm reading the Wraeththu trilogy right now.
Whatserface....grr...oh yeah. Diana Wynn Jones did it in her quartet.
and yes. sabriel does it as well. generally they all tie together at the end. but gah!

Oh yeah, that quartet... I remember that I read each book about a year apart, and by the time I had gotten to the last book where it all tied together, I didn't remember anything about the first two character stories. Sabriel I really liked despite the character switch, simply because I like Lirael better as a character I think. I can't think of any more really close examples, but in the Wheel of Time books Jordan jumps around from character to character and you never have time after book 4 or so to find out much about any of them.

Diana Wynne Jones does that a lot. Take Chrestomanci. Every single book has a different main character... well... okay, Christopher and Cat both reappear a couple times... But I forgive her for that because I adore each and every main character so much. XD
I guess I've been reading series like that for so long that it doesn't really bother me. Like Redwall.

Oh yeah, Redwall. I didn't even think about those. I guess because so often they're completely different plotlines.
