Ukiah was one of those rare cities that still had phone booths, and someone passing by would not have thought twice about seeing another person using one. If that someone had heard the conversation going on inside this particular phone booth, they certainly would have thought twice.
"...right. I understand. We'll leave California as soon as possibe."
"Thank you, Miss Talbot. We're going to need as many Warders as we can get in the Great Lakes soon."
"Oh. Out of curiosity, who do you have in the immediate area right now?"
There was an uncomfortable pause. The person on the other end of the line coughed nervously.
"Erm...the Grey Fangs Skulk."
"The who?"
"I'm not surprised you haven't heard of them. They've only been operating for about a year now."
"Why do you have rookies near one of the biggest hotspots for Kekkai activity?"
"...We didn't think the Predator King would be awakening as soon as he is. No, they don't know about it yet, we're going to contact them about the situation soon. It was a major mistake- look, Miss Talbot, just get here as soon as you can. We need your cabal's help."
"I know. Look, we'll get there as soon as we can. I suppose I'll see you there."
"You will. Goodbye, Miss Talbot."
Meanwhile, the afforementioned Grey Fangs Skulk was having a very normal day, normal meaning sitting around not doing much of anything. Fenya was reading the newspaper, Ektarina was stumbling around in a half-awoken stupor, Simeon was making toast, and Sacha was not yet out of his room.
"Hm. Hey, take a look at this. That serial killer's started attacking near here." Fenya said.
"Unurhg." Ektarina relplied sagely while pouring a cup of coffee.
"He- well, or she- has been travelling across the US, brutally murdering humans. Wait...Ted Connelly. That name sounds familiar."
"Ted Connelly. Hmm...I've heard that name before too." Simeon chimed in. "Oh, God! Isn't he a Cat?"
"Yeah, that's it." A tone of mild horror was creeping into Fenya's voice.
"And someone named Chakri was one of the victims. Isn't he a Prodigal?"
There was an awkward pause. Sacha walked in and tore the Sudoku puzzle straight out of the newspaper. No one really bothered saying anything, as Sacha did stupid stuff like that all the time.
"Think it was just a coincidence?" Simeon said quietly.
"...Let's hope so. I'd rather not have a serial killer running around here."
And then, the phone started ringing.

**************In a forest outside of Joah, in the province of Kinx (Kee-nz), Kekkai territory.****** A noise was heard outside of the lair but none of the people lounging around on the couches moved to check what it was. "Agh the stupid squirrels keep stealing from my supply holes," Jared complained as he hurriedly shut the door to the forest floor above him. "If you threw fish heads at ME, I'd do more than steal from your supply holes." "Ugh, Marcus, you know what? You're a bleeding fool." Jared thumped his messenger bag on the table. Grinning, he pulled out a rose and an envelope. "Hey--what's that?" Marcus asked, peering over Jared's shoulder. Jared passed the envelope, addressed with writing that tried so hard to be calligraphy. "Ooo--- It says it's for Mikah! Hey everyone! Mikah's girlfriend wrote him another letter!" Marcus and Jared started whooping and the whole room started shouting for them to open it. So they did. "Dearest Mikah," Jared started. "I'm so bored here without you. I realy miss seeing you and laughing with you. There's just no one here who's nearly as funny or interesting....or handsome as you smiley smiley kissy smiley---" Mikah fell down the steps and tackled Jared, grabbing and ripping the letter. "Aw. Bloody ell.... You guys suck, you know that?" "smiley smiley kissy smiley!" Marcus shouted, and jumped out of the way of Mikah's lunge. Mikah threw his hands up in the air "Ah! I hate people!" "But you loooooove Em's" "Hm wonder what that says about her?" "She's a toad!" "Agh! Toadzilla! Agh she'll kill us all!" Mikah stomped out of the den and down to his bedroom. He finished piecing his letter together at his desk, taping it just right, and rolled onto his bed to read it, finally. Marcus came down the steps -- "Hey dude" "ugh, can't you leave me alone for like 5 minutes? I swear." "Sorry, guy, seriously, but the phone -- it's for you."

"What if he couldn't make it?" "Of course he could, Dydri." "Or what if he died on the way here?" That at least caused Stella to raise an eyebrow. "Died? What on earth do you expect to happen to him?" "Well don't people in Britain drive on the other side of the road? So, like, he'd accidently drive on the other side of the road here. And die." "Just shut up, Dydri." "And how are we going to find him in this crowd?" Dydri asked, gesturing to the stands of the stadium. As always, with home games, the football stands were packed. "You've seen this guy before. And I trust that you will retain some powers of observation." "Yeah, but-" "Shut up, Dydri," Stella said one more time before the drum major glared at her pointedly and cued the marching band to play "Jungle Boogie."
Slouching into the stadium, Dal thought, "This post- I mean, trip- is pointless."

An alley somewhere in Ukiah. EDIT: Actually, an alley in whichever city this is going to take place in.
“Kyo, do we need to be here?” Just like his little brother, complaining about everything. Not that Kyo liked being in the alley anymore than his brother did. But Kyo smiled. “We do. We were ordered to, and we obey orders.” Hashan sighed. “It doesn’t feel right, being in a city.”
“I agree. But it doesn’t change that we have to be here.”
“It also doesn’t change that you are getting in to something larger than you know.” The quiet voice spoke from above the brothers, and before they could react, a short, slim, pale figure dropped down, black cloak flaring out around him.
“Do you know me?” The man stepped forward, face still hidden. “You should. Silence is power, young ones.” He smiled, teeth glinting in the light, but his face was still hidden. “You,” he said, looking at Kyo, “are Kyo. Kyo Nejen. Tierce, warrior. And you,” he turned to face Hashan, “are Hashan, his younger brother, Hashan. Waxing moon, priest. And entirely too pious for your own good.”
“How do you know our names?” Kyo stepped forward, hands clenching in to fists. “And who are you?”
He laughed. “Little ones, you are full of fire, but fire can burn, as well as shedding light,” the cloaked man said, shaking his head. “Know me, for I am Silexcen.” On the last word, he disappeared, fading away.

Halftime had come and gone. Stella listened to the band director critiquing the marching band's performance, although this was becoming difficult as Dydri bounced up and down in her seat like the Energizer Bunny on caffeine. Finally another band member clamped their hand on Dydri's shoulder. She paused for a moment to give the sousaphone player a reproachful look, then started vibrating with suppressed energy. At last the talk was over, and Dydri sprang up with a bound and raced away to take off her uniform. She bobbed and wove with the grace of a weasel through the crowd. Stella followed at a sane pace. Soon a tall guy came up to her and gestured after the fleeing Dydri. "Friend of yours?" he asked. He had a British accent. "Perhaps," Stella said. "You are Dal?" "How did you know?" "How many British guys walk around highschool football games in America?" Stella asked. And that was how they all met. A number of years later... "Phone for you, Stella," said Dal. The three were meeting at her house over the summer. "Joy," said Stella as she walked over and grabbed the portable phone. She walked into the kitchen, where Dydri and Dal couldn't hear her- not that they would have bothered; both were engaged in a game of Halo 2. "We've got a job to do," said Stella as she re-entered the room. "What?" asked Dal, pausing the game. "A website to check out," said Stella. "Trinityharmony.com, the place to find your soulmate-weasel." "It's about time you got a boyfriend," Dydri piped up. Stella gave her the look. "People that sign up for meetups have been dissapearing." "And nobody's checked into this legally?" Dal asked. "The website is based in some remote country," Stella said. "Law enforcement can't touch it- and plus, who wants to stick up for a bunch of animals anyway?" she said in her usual monotone. "Stop being silly," Dydri said. "And let's finish the game before you tell us more." Dal agreed, and soon they were busy blowing each other up again.

“Silexcen.” Hashan’s voice was filled with disbelief. “The greatest assassin alive, perhaps the greatest assassin ever, and he’s here?”
“Apparently.” Kyo started walking, heading towards a more central place in the city. “What’s the big deal, anyway? He’s awakening. I mean, even the two of us got called here.”
“You don’t understand,” Hashan said, eyes afire as he caught up to his brother. “He talked to us. Two teenaged, insignificant Bats. This is going to be big.”
“We knew that already.” Kyo stepped, blinking, in to a sunny pathway. “It’s not as if he told us anything we didn’t know already.”
“Yes, but he talked to us.”
Kyo rolled his eyes. Why did he have to put up with Hashan, and not someone else? He kept walking, ignoring his little brother’s babbling.
* * *
Silexcen panted, lying on the roof. I really shouldn’t have done that, he thought ruefully. But it was the only way to do it. Rolling over on to his stomach, the were-bat watched the brothers walk off. Standing, he winced. “Soon,” he muttered, “soon.”
Silently, he followed the two until he was sure of their probable destination. Then he slipped off, heading towards the market as fast as he could. The two would likely arrive there soon, but he’d get there first.
