Isn't this the most hackneyed cliche ever? Look, it wasn't even that original when Tolkien did it. Plus, it's really anticlimatic. Where's the excitement and anticipation going to go when you realize that the hero is destined to win. At least most console RPGs put a twist on it when and if they use it. Kind of sad, eh? I like the twist Tales of Destiny 2 (JP, obviously) put on it the most, though. If my understanding of Japanese is right, the scene went something like this... (SPOILERS, naturally)
To give a brief recap of the events so far, Loni and Kyle are two orphans (well, not Kyle. His mother is the matron of the orphanage, so he just has a really big family) who are out to find some funding for the orphanage they live at. Kyle has semi-alterior motives: he wants to be seen as a hero so he can live up to his legendarily heroic father (loooong story). Upon hearing a rumor of a lens (source of magic-type-thing) worth three millon Gald (currency) , they break into a ruin in order to steal it. But when they finally find the stupid thing, it breaks and then a girl randomly appears. This exchange happens:
Girl (talking to self): I must find the hero...the hero who will change the course of time... Kyle (slightly more vainglorious than usual): Yup, that's me! Girl: ...No, you aren't. (walks off) Kyle: Huh? Loni: What the heck was that about?
And then, they got arrested. It was the coolest thing ever, except for the plot twist in WA3 involving the "prophecy."

XD Sounds amusing.
And yes, this has got to be the most overused cliche... few even try to put an original spin on "you are the chosen one!" anymore.

The Japanese do with their wacky video games. Which is why I say that video games are actually being more inventive with storylines and whatnot than novel-writers (in fantasy, at least). Which is somehow sad and funny at the same time. The genres in some of the games are awesome too. Like sci-fantasy-western.
Now I really want to go write a rant about that. (scurries off)

*tries to think of good chosen one alternatives*
oo okay i know it's a kid's book but Pendragon sort of twists the chosen one cliche by having the chosen one screw up everything. a lot ^_^...err but in the books it's not supposed to be funny.heh.
ummm the Ender books soooorrta do it but they're much more clever in their presentation.

Hey, anything can be twisted to make it original and fun. I never read the Pendragon books. And I don't remember much about Ender's Game... I never really got into that book.
