An example of truly awesome fantasy, in my opinion, and a complete bash of the "all fantasy is derivative" argument. There's two or three people in this series that you could argue are the protagonists, and all of them are on different sides- there's no clear-cut "good vs. evil." But plot aside, the books are hilarious, and narrated by the demon Bartimaeus, a wisecracking lovable evil djinni that's been around for thousands of years, as have all demons. There's plenty of twisted historical references, all told from the cynical demon's point of view. Has anyone else read these? If not, you should.

oh i know! i love this trilogy, especially its refusal to conform to a standard fantasy ending.
sweet sweet, but bitter sweet.
all the while. i WANTED to root for kitty or bartimaeus or nathanial. but they each had their flaws. which, though perhaps less comfortable to read, is a wonderful deviation from the norm!
love to bartimaeus

I ended up rooting for Kitty the most in the third book. I think I might have rooted for Nathaniel in the first... but not in the 2nd or 3rd. SPOILER Except for the ending, of course. END SPOILER
