Because there are a few thousand times more "Other books" than there are fantasy stories. So what are people's favorites? Why?
I like Watership Down and Good Omens the best, as evidenced by previously created boards.

:3 I think people miss out on my favourite book, Metropole by Ferenc Karinthy. Literally NOBODY has read it. And it really is awesome. There is absolutely no dialogue apart from a few lines of foreign gibberish (along the lines of "kekeke" - it's meant to be gibberish). Go! Find it in a bookshop! Read it! Make me happy

You're right... I've never heard of it. XD I shall look for it, though I may not be able to find it.

You could try to find it on Amazon instead, then :3 It was only recently translated from Hungarian, so I'm not sure how wide it's release is.

Hungarian! *starts humming My Fair Lady songs*
... Sorry, my exam today was on My Fair Lady. >__> Anyway. I'll look for it at libraries first, because libraries are spiffy.
Also, I have another random book to add to the list-- A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter Miller. It's very darkly humorous.

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien goes without saying. ^_^
I love all of the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik and out of both of those, I have trouble picking between His Majesty's Dragon and Throne of Jade but heck, any book in the series is great.
I like Terry Pratchett's books too (who doesn't? xD) including his collaboration with Neil Gaiman, Good Omens. Out of just Pratchett's works, I really like Mort and Going Postal.
Anything by Antony Horowitz usually qualifies as a favourite book.
I finished Foundation by Isaac Asimov recently and found it to be a very complex and enjoyable book which anybody should read.
Finally I really like Stoneheart by Charlie Fletcher because it is just so interesting and different.
Also a couple of Russian books but I doubt anybody will be interested so I won't mention them. =3

So the Temeraire series is how you got your name! (XD I've always meant to ask that-- those are great books.)
Another addition for my favorite non-fantasy books-- as far as nonfiction goes, Dave Barry trumps all. ^^

I never managed to finish Good Omens. Does that make me a bad person?
The Rai-Kirah Trilogy by Carol Berg. ((Transformation, Revelation, Restoration.))
Dune by Frank Herbert, along with most of the sequels/prequels.
The Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman. ((Dark Sun Rising, True Night Falls, Crown of Shadows. I think that's the right order, at least. My favorite is the last book, least favorite, the second.))
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. ((<3 ..the first book is A Game of Thrones.))
The Kushiel books by Jacqueline Carey. ((Which is actually in the adult section of the library for a reason, for once. But they're good books. First one is Kushiel's Dart.))
